Speed Stacks!
This week I started a speed stacking unit at Truman. The students were nuts about it. The reason I love it is because it forces students to use both their left and right hand. Research has shown that this activates both the left and the right side of the brain. It also improves concentration and focus. Many students have asked about where to get speed stackers. You can click on the following website to learn more, or purchase stacks. http://www.speedstacks.com/
Then this link can show you how to build each stack. http://www.speedstacks.com/docs/SportStackingInstructions.pdf. Enjoy!
Welcome back to Vista for the2012-13 year! I am so excited to be back at Vista again this year. I am the P.E. teacher at Vista on Mondays and Tuesdays. I work with the all of the grade levels, and I see each class once a week.
I want to thank the Vista staff, students, and parents for the overwhelming support of the PE program I have received so far. I want to say a special thanks to Principal Randall and her dedication to the student’s fitness. Last year she found the funds to buy all new supplies for all of the classrooms' recess time. Vista has an extensive P.E. closet, and recess supplies that the students enjoy on a daily basis. This is thanks to a school and community dedicated to keeping students healthy. I really appreciate the dedication and supplies, and it makes P.E. a lot easier and fun.
This year at Vista we are doing the Presidential Physical Fitness. This is a national program that encourages students to be active, and eat healthy on a daily basis. At the beginning of the year the students are tested in 5 areas. An endurance run, shuttle run, sit-ups, push-ups, and V-sit (flexibility). Then we work all year long to stay active and healthy. At the end of the year we test the students in the same areas. The students goal is to improve upon their own scores from the beginning of the year. If they make enough of an improvement, they get a certificate signed by the president. If you want to help with this testing, volunteers are greatly appreciated. At Vista we are Gold Medal School that is working towards a Platinum Achievement again this year. This means that as a community we have built healthy fitness and nutrition habits that the state of Utah recognizes. We have a Gold Medal Mile track on the playground that students can earn "feet" for walking or running on a daily or weekly basis. The teachers have been dedicated to taking their students out to be active, even when there was no official P.E. class. Nutrition is discussed, and the school menu was made to meet those nutrition needs. We should be proud of what Vista has accomplished over the last several years in the Gold Medal Schools program. This year as we work towards a Platinum Focus level, we chose a focus area for the year: fruits, vegetables, and healthy eating habits. We will learn more about how fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and nutrients for our bodies, and the life-long benefits of making healthy eating choices. To learn more about the Gold Medal School programs please visit the website. http://health.utah.gov/obesity/gms/index.html
We are also a NFL Play 60 school. This is a program through the National Football League that also tries to get students to build healthy habits by exercising at least 60 minutes a day, and making wiser food choices. This program has an interactive dashboard for schools, and students where you can track your own progress towards the school goals, and see how the school is doing as a whole. This website is very informative. Please sign up and make the pledge to be healthier this year right on their website. http://www.fueluptoplay60.com/ .
We are also excited to be a part of champion village now. Champion Village is an online portal that gives students a chance to earn points for their physical fitness, record their healthy food and exercise habits, and build a custom character. This website provides parents with the chance to keep up with what their students are doing, monitor their progress, and check off their physical activities. This is all in an effort to change the online gaming of the students into a more active process. Check it all out at http://www.championvillage.com.
Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or would like to help. I appreciate the support.
